Porís de Candelaria: some interesting facts
Porís de Candelaria is an enclave in the municipality of Tijarafe where small white houses blend into the rocky landscape, on the shores of deep blue waters:
- The name: As well as being known as Porís de Candelaria, this site is also called “Proís de Candeleria”. The word “proís”, according to the RAE, refers to a mooring point for boats on land. In addition, the name pays homage to the Virgin of Candelaria, of whom there is an image in the area.
- Varied access: To reach this geological jewel, you can take three routes: by car along a road that winds its way from Tijarafe; on foot, enjoying the circular route PR LP 12.2, which reveals the natural beauty of La Palma; or by boat from the Port of Tazacorte, passing other points of interest such as the beach of La Veta and Cueva Bonita.
- Hidden history: The charming little white houses that adorn Porís de Candelaria are nearly a century old. They were built by the locals who were looking for a shelter to spend the hot summers. In addition, the nearby Cueva Bonita Cave served as a hideout for fishermen during the 17th century when pirates were stalking the coasts.
- A natural and preserved corner: Although the place invites you to swim and rest, it is essential to remember that it is an area without lifeguards, and lacks basic services such as kiosks or litter bins. However, this also guarantees a more authentic experience in tune with nature.
Playa del Jurado: connection with nature
On the rugged and rugged coast of Tijarafe is the Playa del Jurado, a place that combines the beauty of the natural landscape with a sense of awe and respect.
Features
Playa del Jurado is a pebble beach, which makes it practically virgin, conveying a sensation of isolation and tranquillity. But what is really striking is the imposing cliff that rises more than 400 metres from the beach, offering a spectacular view of the horizon.
Precautions
Despite its beauty, Playa del Jurado is not considered a suitable place for bathing. The sea in this area tends to have a strong swell, and the beach itself can be somewhat unsafe. If you decide to venture into these waters, it is recommended that you do so with great caution and awareness of the sea conditions.
Getting to know “La Cueva Bonita”
La Cueva Bonita, formerly known as the Cueva de Candelaria, is a geological wonder located near the mouth of El Jurado in the municipality of Tijarafe. Its name is not in vain, as its interior offers a surprising spectacle that hypnotises all those who enter its depths.
History and Legend
This impressive cave has witnessed crucial moments in history, particularly during the 17th century. Legend has it that local fishermen managed to save their lives from pirate attacks thanks to this cave. The pirates, unaware of the existence of two mouths in the cave, waited in vain while the fishermen entered from one side and exited from the other, thus evading danger.
Natural Beauty
La Cueva Bonita is not only famous for its history, but also for its incredible natural beauty. Its interior glows with vibrant colours, and the water, especially calm during the summer, creates a magical atmosphere that is well worth experiencing.
Access and Excursions

Several companies run these trips, allowing visitors to enter the cave on days when the sea is good. It is considered a “Must do of La Palma” and forms an integral part of the island’s tourist activities.
